SILT, Colo. — The Dry Hollow School District #42 was formed on March 28, 1912 and encompassed 12.51 square miles.
Fred Harris donated 1 1/2 acres of land. R.E. Boulton, Frank Stobaugh, William Smart and John Rogers were members of the school board and each took a wagon and hauled the logs from Seman Park between Rifle Creek and Elk Creek to build the schoolhouse. The logs were hauled over the Harvey Gap Dam that was being rebuilt at that time, after being washed out. Men in the district built the schoolhouse.

The first teacher at Dry Hollow was Mrs. Ida Davis, who taught for four months at $60 per month. Other teachers included Grace Curtis, Patricia Parker,  Carol Stout, Eva Zastrow, Helen Collins, Lula Dodd, R.C. Snoddy, Louise Ryan, Laura Ewers. Mildred Harman, Florence Chilson, John Youmans, Elizabeth Rees, Kathryn Sours, Wilma Zipse, Julia Stapleton, Pauline Teague, Winnie Whitby and Beulah Coulter. Emma Wagner was the last teacher in 1959.

In 1948, when electricity was available, a stoker coal furnace was installed under the schoolhouse to replace the coal stove in the school room. It remained a school until 1959, when it became too hard to find teachers that would travel that far out of town. The children were bused to Rifle and in 1963 the district was consolidated with Garfield Re-2 school district.
