Bridge closures from Glenwood to Rifle

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. — The Grand Avenue bridge in Glenwood isn’t the only bridge that will see replacement in the near future.  Just in time for summer, CDOT has recently announced that all the bridges from New Castle, Silt and Rifle will also be replaced, causing closures in all three municipalities.
The projects are expected to take at least ten years to complete. But that’s on construction time, not real time.
“Why should Glenwood be the only one to have a new bridge?” said a Silt official, stomping his feet. “We want one, too!”
Mayor McCheese of Rifle agreed.
“We want a new bridge as well!” he said. “Why should Glenwood get all the glory of having traffic backed up and alternate routes? We’re going to propose a rafting service to shuffle people between north and south Rifle!”
While town of Silt officials said they had no idea what they would do, it was proposed that people stuck in town just sit on park benches and stare at the naked rock climber in the center of the town’s roundabout.
New Castle, which constructed a new pedestrian bridge across the river last year, said people would just have to walk or swim to get to the other side of town while the bridge was under construction.
“What’s a little water going to hurt?” said one city official. “So they’ll have to swim for the next ten years. But it’s good exercise.”
However, the local chambers of commerce are not real happy about it, saying it will hinder tourist visits to their communities.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” a Rifle chamber board member said. “I guess we’ll just have to raise money by having a skinny-dipping festival in the Colorado River featuring local community officials…”
